Dr Martin Fowler

Martin researches, consults, writes, photographs and illustrates aspects of architecture, cultural patterns and the arts of Melanesia and the region. He is a sometime collector of things and documents. His particular interest is in issues about cultural continuity and change and the contemporary expressions of these.

He grew up in New Guinea, studied in Australia, became architect of the National Museum of PNG, and was government advisor on culture-heritage-architecture projects mid 1970s. In Australia Martin has done significant research work and produced publications, practiced architecture, and taught in academia in Melbourne, including community based studio projects. He taught at Unitech Lae PNG 2003-05.

Martin is co-curator of two large commissioned architectural works from Abelam and Kwoma artists from PNG for the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Arts December 2012-April 2013, Queensland Art Gallery GoMA, Brisbane. He is in ongoing discussions with the National Museum and Art Gallery in PNG about architectural heritage and building matters, and works on preparing publications.
